The MA Department of Public Health’s Office of Health Equity has provided grant funding to health care organizations and community-based organizations for its Health Disparities Reduction Initiative since 2007. Since the fall of 2010, the Institute for Community Health has supported Health Disparities Reduction grantees in developing programs that provide models for sustainable and comprehensive approaches to reducing health disparities in the communities they serve. Specifically, ICH has provided technical assistance on elements critical for promoting lasting change in communities, including the following:
- Engaging in systems thinking to identify and address barriers (within and outside organizations) to change
- Developing strong partnerships within and outside organizations
- Collecting/using data on identified outcomes to improve programs and better serve clients
Technical assistance has included facilitating group and individual grantee conference calls, providing individualized feedback on grantee workplans, researching and compiling resource materials, and organizing an all-day grantee conference.

The conference was an opportunity to celebrate grantees’ accomplishments over the past 5 years and get grantee input on what future efforts in disparities reduction in MA should look like.
