The Research in Transforming Health and Health Care Systems (RTHS) program is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant program, managed by AcademyHealth, that since 2017 has funded five cohorts of researchers studying the potential effects of policies intended to transform health systems. In 2025, ICH was contracted to conduct an evaluation of this program in order to capture funded activities over the past six years of programming. We will focus on the impact of shifting priorities and strategies in the program as it moved from a fairly traditional research model to one of increasing community participation, tracking both how the program was implemented and how the research it generated impacted the field. The evaluation will begin with an extensive document review and design period, during which ICH will collaborate with AcademyHealth to design the evaluation. When the evaluation is complete, ICH will produce a report on evaluation findings, and work with AcademyHealth to disseminate findings more broadly in order to guide future grantmaking aimed at health system change.
