The MA Department of Public Health’s Comprehensive Cancer Control Program contracted ICH to conduct an environmental scan of lung cancer screening in Massachusetts in order to investigate the barriers and facilitators to lung cancer screening experienced by providers and patients, and to recommend strategies for increasing screening uptake at the state level.  ICH conducted an initial literature review. We then facilitated a series of key informant interviews with 12 lung cancer screening subject matter experts, including medical providers, health center leadership, patient navigators, and researchers, across Massachusetts. To better understand their experiences with lung cancer screening, we also conducted focus groups with a total of 21 community members who were eligible for lung cancer screening based on their age and smoking history. ICH analyzed data from both data collection activities to identify themes. We produced a report for MDPH that identified key barriers and facilitators to screening and made recommendations to facilitate widespread screening. MDPH plans to use this information  to inform the development of a lung cancer screening project in Massachusetts.
