In response to the ongoing opioid overdose crisis, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health is funding five service providers across the Commonwealth to offer intensive, trauma-informed, person-centered, and gender-responsive services to women and nonbinary people with a history of substance misuse as they re-enter their communities after incarceration. Building on work evaluating a complementary program serving Black and Latino men at risk of overdose, ICH, along with our partners at the Crime and Justice Institute, is evaluating the implementation and outcomes of this new program that aims to support participants toward holistic recovery and re-integration in their communities and families. Data sources will include program and service data, in-depth interviews with provider staff and participants, and a longitudinal participant survey aimed at assessing outcomes over time. Evaluation results will elevate strengths and challenges of the program model; support the development and dissemination of best practices for new and existing programs; and inform approaches to continuing to reduce opioid overdose deaths for service providers, funders, and policymakers.
